What is the difference between ERC-3643 and ERC-20?

ERC-3643 extends ERC-20, so existing wallets and tools can read it. The difference is control. A plain ERC-20 token can be sent to anyone, and once sent it can’t be frozen or recovered. An ERC-3643 token only moves between verified holders when the offering’s rules allow it, and authorised agents can freeze, recover or force-transfer units.

Key facts

  • The IERC3643 interface extends IERC20.
  • Balances and transfers use the familiar ERC-20 functions.
  • Adds identity checks, compliance rules, agent roles, freezing, recovery and batch operations.

What stays the same?

Balances, transfers and the standard Transfer event. Software that reads ERC-20 tokens can read ERC-3643 tokens.

What’s added?

An identity registry, a compliance contract, an owner and agents, and controls for pausing, freezing, recovery and forced transfers. A transfer that would break the rules fails instead of settling.
