What is ERC-3643?

ERC-3643 is an open token standard for regulated assets such as fund units, bonds and shares, approved through Ethereum’s standards process. A token built to it can only be held by verified investors, only moves when the offering’s rules allow it, and gives authorised agents controls to freeze holdings, recover them after a lost key and force transfers when legally required. It reached Final status in December 2023 and runs on any EVM-compatible network.

Key facts

  • Full title in the specification: “T-REX - Token for Regulated EXchanges”.
  • Status: Final, since 12 December 2023. Category: ERC.
  • Builds on ERC-20 (fungible tokens) and ERC-173 (contract ownership).
  • Defines seven interfaces and eleven MUST requirements.
  • The specification is public domain (CC0).

What problem does it solve?

A plain token can be sent to anyone, and once sent it can’t be frozen or recovered. That doesn’t work for securities, where only eligible investors may hold an asset and someone must be able to act on a court order or a lost key. ERC-3643 puts those rules and controls into the token itself.

How does it work, in short?

Each holder’s wallet is linked to an on-chain identity that carries signed claims, such as a KYC check, from verifiers the issuer trusts. Before any transfer runs, the token checks that the receiver is verified and that the offering’s rules allow the transfer. If either check fails, nothing moves.

Who uses it?

Issuers, transfer agents, fund administrators, custodians and venues. Many organisations implement the standard independently; no single provider controls it. The ERC3643 Association brings together organisations that use and support it.
